Best Time to Visit Normandy

The best time to visit Normandy for most trips is May or September, when the weather is at its driest and sunniest and the seasonal sites are open. Avoid July, August and the weeks around the June 6 D-Day anniversary, and you see the same places with far lighter Normandy crowds.

The weather in brief

Normandy is mild rather than hot. Météo-France normals for 1991-2020 put average daily highs at Caen-Carpiquet between 8.3°C in January and 23.2°C in August, and at Rouen-Boos between 6.9°C in January and 23.4°C in July and August.

May to September bring the fewest rainy days, about 8-11 a month, and the most sunshine, roughly 160-220 hours a month. October to January are the wettest and darkest months. For the month-by-month picture, see Normandy weather by month.

Normandy in spring (April to June)

Spring is when to visit Normandy if gardens matter to you. Monet’s house and gardens open on April 1 (2026 dates), and Normandy Tourism suggests a weekday in spring for Giverny, ideally in the late afternoon. Book online: once the online ticket quota is reached, you can expect long waits at the gate.

On the D-Day coast, spring is one of the quieter seasons until early June. The weeks around June 6 are the busiest of the year on the beaches because of the anniversary events. The D-Day Festival Normandy ran from May 30 to June 14 in 2026, and Normandy Tourism lists the 83rd anniversary commemorations for May 29 to June 13, 2027.

If you want to be there for the ceremonies, read the June 6 anniversary guide and plan early. If you would rather have quieter beaches at Omaha Beach and Pointe du Hoc, come in April or May instead.

Summer (July and August)

Summer has the longest, warmest days and the heaviest crowds. Normandy Tourism advises skipping July and August at both Étretat and Giverny, along with school holidays, and it names late morning to mid-afternoon as the busiest stretch at each. At Étretat it adds fine-weather weekends to the list.

Honfleur’s tourist office gives similar advice about the summer peak and long weekends. The seafront at Deauville gets very busy on fine days.

Mont-Saint-Michel receives twice as many visitors in summer as in winter, according to the public body that runs the site. In mid and high season, its online car-park booking rewards early-morning and late-afternoon arrivals, so check the official site before you set your schedule.

If summer is your only window, put the famous sites on weekdays. In Rouen, the free summer light show at Rouen Cathedral gives you a reason to stay into the evening. It ran from May 29 to September 26 in 2026.

Autumn (September to November)

September still falls in the drier May-to-September window, and the summer crowds have gone. Normandy Tourism recommends mid-autumn for a Giverny visit, and the D-Day beaches are quieter in autumn too.

Watch the calendar as the season ends. Monet’s house and gardens close after November 1 (2026 dates), and the Jardins d’Étretat were listed as open to November 1, 2026. The Utah Beach D-Day Museum closes from November 16 to December 14. The Caen Memorial has several closed days in November and December 2026, so check its official site before you go.

Normandy in winter (December to March)

Normandy in winter is quiet, cool and often wet, and it works best if you plan around closures. Mont-Saint-Michel Abbey stays open all year apart from a few public holidays. The Normandy American Cemetery is open daily apart from two winter holidays. Note that the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) expects compulsory pre-registration for all visitors from summer 2027.

Several D-Day museums close for part of the winter:

Winter is also a good time to watch the tides at Mont-Saint-Michel, and the beaches themselves can be visited all year. The highest tides come during spring-tide periods, roughly twice a month. In the published table for November 2026 to April 2027, the largest coefficient is 110, on February 22, 2027. Check dates in the Mont-Saint-Michel tide calendar.

Closures to know about in 2026 and 2027

Some closures last longer than one season, so check them whatever month you choose:

  • Bayeux Tapestry: The Bayeux Tapestry Museum is closed until autumn 2027. The Tapestry is on show at the British Museum in London from September 10, 2026 to July 11, 2027. Bayeux still works as a base for the beaches.
  • Memorial Pegasus: The museum in Ranville is closed from September 1, 2026, including January to May 2027, with no confirmed reopening date.
  • Normandy American Cemetery: The ABMC expects compulsory pre-registration for all visitors from summer 2027.

Events worth planning around in 2027

2027 is MILLENIUM, the European Year of the Normans. It marks 1,000 years since William the Conqueror was born at Falaise in 1027, with nearly 1,000 events planned in Normandy and across Europe through the year.

Two highlights have been announced. The first is a free show at the Abbaye aux Dames in Caen from February 20 to 27, 2027, which makes it a good reason to visit in late winter. The second is a gathering of Viking ships on the estuaries from June 11 to 27, 2027, ending at the Rouen Armada in June 2027. Those weeks overlap with the D-Day commemorations, so book rooms early if you plan to come in June 2027.
