Rouen Cathedral, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, is the Gothic cathedral in the historic center of Rouen, on Place de la Cathédrale. It is still a working church and the mother church of the diocese. Entry is free and you don’t need to book. Visitors plan around it for three things: the stained glass, the facade Claude Monet painted again and again, and the free light show projected on the west front in summer.
What you will see
The west front and towers
Notre-Dame de Rouen took several centuries to build, and you can read that history in the stone as you stand in the square. The Tour Saint-Romain is the oldest part, from the 12th century. The Portail des Libraires and the Portail de la Calende were added in the 14th century. The west front and the Tour de Beurre date from the 15th and 16th centuries.
Above it all rises the cast-iron spire, 152 meters high. It is the newest piece and was added in the 19th century, so the skyline you see mixes medieval stone with industrial-age metal.
Monet’s cathedral
Claude Monet painted a series of thirty canvases of the cathedral. If you know the Monet Rouen Cathedral paintings, Place de la Cathédrale is where you see the real subject.
If Monet is a reason for your trip, his house and gardens at Giverny make a natural second stop. The Nearby section below has the details.
Inside the cathedral
On your own, you can walk the naves, the transepts, the ambulatory and the side chapels. Take time with the stained glass. The best-known window is the “fish” window, which tells the legend of Saint Julian the Hospitaller.
Some parts stay closed unless you join a guided tour. These are the crypt, the baptistery and the Lady Chapel. The Planning section below explains how the tours work.
The Rouen Cathedral light show
Each summer, a free light show is projected onto the west front. Normandy Tourism lists it among the region’s major events. In 2026 it ran from May 29 to September 26.
The dates shift from year to year. If the show matters to your plans, check the current season’s dates before you fix the day you visit Rouen. You watch it from the square, and there is no ticket.
Planning your visit
When to go
The cathedral is open year-round, so any season works for the interior and the facade. Come in summer if you want to see the light show.
For opening hours, see the Visit facts box above. Note that the departmental tourism board lists shorter winter hours from November 1, 2026, with a midday break, and it marks those hours as unconfirmed. The cathedral’s own hours page doesn’t show that change. Check the official cathedral site close to your visit.
Visits may be limited during services. Masses are held on Sunday mornings and on weekday mornings from Tuesday to Saturday, so plan your walk around the interior for another part of the day if you can.
How long to allow
The cathedral doesn’t publish a suggested visit length. Your time inside depends on how closely you look at the windows and chapels. Allow extra time if you join a guided tour or plan to stay for the light show.
Booking and guided tours
You don’t need to book to visit on your own. Guided tours in French run on Saturdays and Sundays all year, with no booking. These tours are the way to see the crypt, the baptistery and the Lady Chapel.
Groups of up to 18 can book a guided visit that includes the closed areas. Check the official site for the cost and how to arrange one.
House rules
This is an active church, and the cathedral asks visitors to:
- dress respectfully
- remove hats (this applies to men)
- not eat or drink inside
- keep phones on silent
Pets are not allowed inside, even if you carry them.
Accessibility
Step-free access is through the Portail des Maçons on rue du Change. It sits between Place de la Cathédrale and Place de la Calende.
The Explore Normandy Pass
The Explore Normandy Pass is the official pass of Normandie Tourisme, the regional tourism board. Rouen Cathedral is not on its partner list. Since entry here is free, the pass makes no difference to this stop.
My Normandy Pass is an independent guide. It is not affiliated with Normandie Tourisme or the official Explore Normandy Pass.
If you are pricing a wider trip, the Normandy pass calculator lets you pick sites and total their entry prices.
Combining with the rest of Rouen
The cathedral sits in the old center, so it pairs easily with a walk around the town. See the Rouen town guide for the rest of the city. If you are coming just for the day, the Rouen day trip from Paris lays out how to plan it.
Getting there
By train
The nearest station is Rouen Rive Droite, with trains from Paris Saint-Lazare. SNCF Connect lists 33 trains a day on this route. The fastest takes 1 hour 13 minutes, and the average is 1 hour 29 minutes. For fares, check the rail operator’s site.
By local transport
From the station, you have three options:
- TEOR: take line T1, T2 or T3 to the Cathédrale stop.
- Bus: take the F1, F7 or 11 to République.
- Metro: ride to Palais de Justice.
By car
If you drive from Paris, note that the A13 Saint-Cloud tunnel near Paris is closed in the Paris-to-Normandy direction from November 16, 2026, to the end of August 2027. Diversions are signed. This page has no parking details for the cathedral, so check local options before you set off.
Without a car
Rouen works well as a train-based stop. The Normandy without a car itinerary shows how to link it with other places by public transport.
Nearby
The driving times below are estimates from OpenStreetMap routing and don’t account for traffic.
- Giverny: about 60 minutes and 74 km away. This is home to Monet’s House and Gardens, the obvious match after seeing the cathedral he painted.
- Honfleur: about 62 minutes and 78 km away. Its old harbor makes a good contrast with a day in Rouen’s medieval center.
- Étretat: about 74 minutes and 88 km away. It adds the chalk cliffs of the coast to a trip built around Rouen.
