A Mont-Saint-Michel day trip from Paris is possible, but it makes for a long day. The fastest public transport route takes about 3 hours each way. It suits you if you don’t mind an early start and mainly want to see the abbey and walk the village. Normandy Tourism suggests allowing at least half a day on the Mont. The village is free to enter, the abbey is ticketed, and the whole site has been on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1979. For background on what to see, read our Mont-Saint-Michel guide and the abbey page.
By train
Every Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel rail route leaves from Paris-Montparnasse, not Saint-Lazare. You have two options, and for fares on both, see the From Paris box above.
TGV and coach via Rennes (recommended)
This is the easiest way to do Mont-Saint-Michel by train. Around 22 trains a day run from Paris-Montparnasse to Rennes. The fastest takes 1h25 and the average is 1h45.
At Rennes, leave by the north exit and go down to level 0, where the bus station sits inside the railway station. The Keolis Armor coach takes about 1h10 to the Le Verger stop at the Mont. Keolis says every coach connects with TGVs to and from Paris, and it gives about 3 hours for the whole journey.
From November 2, 2026 to March 28, 2027, the coach runs twice a day, every day:
- Leaves Rennes at 08:45, arrives at the Mont at 10:00
- Leaves Rennes at 13:00, arrives at the Mont at 14:15
- Leaves the Mont for Rennes at 11:35 and 16:45
Book your coach seat ahead, because no tickets are sold on board. Outside these dates, check the Keolis Armor timetable.
Train to Pontorson
SNCF Connect lists 2 trains a day from Paris-Montparnasse to Pontorson - Mont-Saint-Michel. These need one change, and the fastest takes 2h57.
Pontorson is 9 km from the Mont. Bus line 2 runs every day from the station in about 27 minutes. It ends at a terminus 350 m from the village.
In summer, a NOMAD “Mont-Saint-Michel train” also runs from Paris-Montparnasse to Pontorson, with a direct bus connection. Its 2026-27 dates have not been published yet.
From the stop to the Mont
The free Le Passeur shuttle links the coach stop and the car parks with a point 350 m from the village. The ride takes about 12-15 minutes. If you prefer to walk, the bridge takes about 35-45 minutes.
Keep your train ticket. If you show a Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel ticket used within 5 days, you get a reduced abbey ticket.
How long you need on site
The abbey alone takes 45 minutes to 1h30. The public body that runs the site advises 1h30-2h for the whole Mont. Normandy Tourism suggests at least half a day.
Expect about 350 steps in total between the Grande Rue and the abbey. Leave large bags in Paris. The abbey refuses suitcases and anything bigger than cabin size, and it has no luggage storage. The visitor center on the mainland does have lockers.
On a guided tour
A Mont-Saint-Michel tour from Paris saves you from planning connections, but tours vary widely. Before you book one, ask these questions:
- Time on the Mont. Is it close to the half day Normandy Tourism suggests? Or is it nearer the minimum for the abbey alone?
- Abbey entry. Is your abbey ticket included, or do you buy it yourself?
- Transport. Is it by train and coach, or by road? Road tours face the A13 closure described below.
- Pickup point and return time. Can you get back to your hotel easily that evening?
Tours suit you if you want everything arranged and don’t mind a fixed schedule. If you are comfortable reading a timetable, the train and coach give you more control.
By car
This page gives no driving time from Paris to the Mont, so plan the route with a live traffic app on the day.
One closure matters for drivers leaving Paris. The northern tube of the A13 Saint-Cloud tunnel near Paris is closed in the Paris-to-Normandy direction from November 16, 2026 to the end of August 2027. Signed diversions run via the RD910 and RN118, or via the RN13 and A14, and rejoin the A13 further west. Expect longer journey times at some hours.
Cars cannot drive to the rock. You park on the mainland, about 2.5 km from the Mont:
- The first 30 minutes are free.
- After that, rates depend on the season and how long you stay. The parking fee includes the Le Passeur shuttle.
- Booking a slot online lowers the rate.
- From September to June, parking is free in the evening.
- Car park P2 is reserved for disabled visitors.
On timing, Normandy Tourism advises visiting on weekdays outside school holidays, in autumn or winter. It suggests arriving early, around 8 a.m., or coming after 5 p.m. It also notes that high-tide days are always crowded.
A sample day
This plan uses the TGV and coach and the winter timetable (November 2, 2026 to March 28, 2027):
- Early morning: Take a TGV from Paris-Montparnasse to Rennes that connects with the morning coach. Keolis matches its coaches to TGV arrivals.
- 08:45: The Keolis Armor coach leaves the Rennes bus station.
- 10:00: Arrive at Le Verger and take Le Passeur to the Mont.
- Late morning: Climb the Grande Rue to the abbey. Allow 45 minutes to 1h30 inside.
- Midday and afternoon: Have lunch in the village, then walk the ramparts. Visit the parish church of Saint-Pierre. If you have time, walk back across the bridge instead of taking the shuttle.
- 16:45: The coach leaves the Mont for Rennes.
- Evening: Take the connecting TGV back to Paris.
The 11:35 return coach is too early for a full visit, so plan around the 16:45 departure.
Staying overnight instead
Stay the night if you want the Mont without rushing, or if you want to see it surrounded by the sea. The village has seven hotels inside the walls, plus a pilgrims’ house, the Maison du Pèlerin.
According to the tourist office, the Mont becomes an island about 20 days a year during spring tides, for about an hour in the morning and evening. To see the tide come in, arrive 1-2 hours before high tide.
Once the water surrounds the Mont, you may wait 1 to 1.5 hours before you can return to the bridge. That wait can be a problem on a day trip, which is one more reason to stay. The site’s 2026 tide booklet flags only two island-risk tides, on August 14 and September 12, and none in November or December 2026. Check the tide calendar before you pick a date.
An overnight stay also makes the Mont a good first or last stop on a longer trip. From the Mont, Bayeux is about 126 minutes by car, according to an OpenStreetMap estimate that does not account for traffic. For full plans, see Three Days in Normandy or Normandy Without a Car. Frequently asked questions
Is a Mont-Saint-Michel day trip from Paris worth it?
It works if you accept a long day. The TGV and coach via Rennes take about 3 hours each way, and Normandy Tourism suggests allowing at least half a day for the village, ramparts and abbey.
How long does the train from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel take?
Keolis Armor puts the TGV to Rennes plus its coach at about 3 hours in all. The train to Pontorson, which needs a change, takes 2h57 at its fastest, and then bus line 2 adds about 27 minutes.
Do I need to book the Rennes coach in advance?
Booking ahead is recommended, and no tickets are sold on board. In winter only two coaches run each day, so a missed seat can cost you the trip.
Do I need a ticket to enter Mont-Saint-Michel?
No. The village is a real commune with no gate or ticket, and only the abbey and the mainland car parks charge. If you show a Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel train ticket used within 5 days, you get a reduced abbey ticket.
Can I bring my luggage on a day trip?
The abbey refuses suitcases and bags larger than cabin size, and it has no luggage storage. The visitor center on the mainland has lockers.
How do I get from the coach stop to the village?
Take the free Le Passeur shuttle, which takes about 12-15 minutes and drops you 350 m from the village. You can also walk along the bridge in about 35-45 minutes.
